An Introduction to Aboriginal Society 2nd Edition by William Edwards

Overview

The first edition of this book was published in 1988, and it has been widely used as a textbook in universities and schools throughout Australia and overseas, as well as by general readers who have sought to gain some understanding of Aboriginal cultures. In this substantial revision the opening chapter on archaeology has taken account of research that has been undertaken since 1988. Some details have been added and references updated in chapters on religion, economics, social organisation, politics, language and art. The previous final chapter on change has been replaced by two chapters, which provide an overview of contact history in Australia from the period of colonisation to the present.

William Edwards

A graduate of the University of Melbourne, W. H. (Bill) Edwards worked in the Pitjantjatjara region of the far north-west of South Australia from 1958 to 1980, as Superintendent and Minister of Ernabella Presbyterian Mission, and from 1977 to 1980, as Minister of the Pitjantjatjara Parish of the Uniting Church. During this period he interpreted for the Pitjantjatjara people in land rights negotiations. From 1981 to 1996 he lectured in Aboriginal Studies at the South Australian College of Advanced Education and the University of South Australia. In retirement he remains an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University where he conducts Pitjantjatjara Language Summer Schools. He interprets in Pitjantjatjara in courts and hospitals and is engaged in post graduate studies in mission history at Flinders University.
