Anatomy & Physiology 1st Edition by Elizabeth Co

Overview

Integrating the learning objectives published by HAPS, Co's ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY presents information in an approachable voice and with a visually stunning art program that improves the learning experience. A dedicated chapter on learning anatomy and physiology, including metacognition and pedagogy reminders throughout, along with study tips authored by successful Anatomy and Physiology students, helps students improve, both within the A&P classroom and beyond.

This new text also brings a focus on diversity and inclusion in everything from presenting diverse perspectives in so-called normal values (such as the approximate number of liters of blood in the human body) to comprehensive diversity of images and models.

MindTap, today's most innovative online learning platform, powers your students from memorization to mastery. MindTap gives you complete control of your course to provide engaging content, challenge every individual and build student confidence.

Elizabeth Co

Liz (Elizabeth) Co is an assistant clinical professor in the Departments of Biology and Health Sciences at Boston University. She teaches human anatomy, human physiology and physiology of reproduction classes. As a professor, Dr. Co is renowned for her passion -- both about the human body and about learning itself. In 2018 she was nominated by students and members of the faculty at Boston University and received the Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, Boston University’s highest teaching award. Dr. Co’s current research focuses on learning, particularly critical-thinking skills development. Within her large introductory courses she integrates an active learning and study skills curriculum. One of the focal points she investigates is how “student awareness about their learning impacts their assessment performance.” She serves on the physiology learning objective panel of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, and works with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute on a project developing educational resources for use in anatomy, physiology and biology courses.
  • MAPPED TO HAPS LEARNING OUTCOMES. Our text tightly maps the Learning Objectives and table of content to HAPS (Human Anatomy & Physiology Society).
  • LEARNER SUPPORT. Chapter 1 is dedicated to teaching learning skills and strategies in A&P. This chapter guides students through the science of learning, providing learning strategies that help them build familiarity and guides them to building mastery. This sets the foundation for learning A&P in a systemic way. Strategies and support are then carried through the text using boxed features. In addition, successful A&P students have written study tips for each chapter to give new learners useful approaches to learning the content.
  • INCLUSIVE AND DIVERSE. The most inclusive and diverse product in Anatomy & Physiology, our text provides a more comprehensive diversity of images and models. Clinical examples detail the predispositions of certain racial and socioeconomic groups to display health care disparities, like sickle cell anemia. In addition, “average” values are paired with comparative data, where applicable. (For example, numbers are typically the result of measurements taken on men. Commonly used physiological averages are usually referring to Caucasian men, approximately 150 pounds who have a moderately active lifestyle.)
  • MINDTAP. The online learning platform that gives you complete control. Craft personalized, engaging learning experiences that boost performance and deliver access to eTextbooks, study tools, assessments and student performance analytics—whether you’re teaching in person, online, or blended.
  • CLINICAL LEARNING ACTIVITIES. Engage students in topics at a higher level with opportunities to think critically, apply their knowledge and assess their understanding to solidify chapter concepts with Virtual Labs, Case Studies and 15-minute “Learn It” mini lessons in MindTap.
  • EXPERIENTIAL VOICE. This text features an experiential voice to bring concepts to life. For example, “If you were running your gloved finger along the medial wall of the right atrium (along the interatrial septum) you would find a depression where the septum feels incredibly thin.” This sensory approach gives students a lively understanding of concepts and avoids dry and “textbook-like” writing.
  • STREAMLINED CONTENT. Today’s textbooks are considered unnecessarily “dense.” To increase approachability, we are streamlining the text to reduce cognitive load.
  • CULTURAL CONNECTIONS FEATURE BOXES link science with culture, and in-class active learning opportunities maximize inclusive and diverse academic experiences. Curriculum and anatomy pertaining to transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals is also provided.
  • VISUALLY STUNNING ARTWORK PROGRAM: including interactive 3D anatomy models for students to explore in MindTap.
  • SUPPLEMENTS SUITE. Additional student supplements include active learning lessons and lessons to achieve I&D in homogeneous classrooms.
