Communicate! 16th Edition by Kathleen S. Verderber/Deanna Sellnow/Rudolph F. Verderber

Overview

Verderber/Sellnow's COMMUNICATE!, 16th EDITION, is a groundbreaking human communication text that equips students with the communication skills they need to be successful communicators across face-to-face, in-person and virtual contexts. The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown forever altered many ways we communicate and the degree to which we rely on technology for communication. However, the fundamentals of effective communication remain largely unchanged. Thus, this edition of COMMUNICATE! remains steadfast in its goal to engage students in the following: learning communication theory in ways that illustrate how it plays out in various communication settings, and applying strategic tools for effective communication in these settings. This edition focuses on evaluating communication and practicing skills across interpersonal, intercultural, group and public speaking settings, and includes skill-building exercises and many other features.

Kathleen S. Verderber

Kathleen S. Verderber is Associate Professor of Management Emeritus at Northern Kentucky University. She holds a Master of Arts in speech communication, an M.B.A., and a doctorate in organizational behavior from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Verderber has consulted with various civic, professional and business organizations. She has published numerous articles in several journals and has presented papers at communication and management conferences. She is a coauthor of Communicate!, The Challenge of Effective Speaking in a Digital Age, COMM, and SPEAK, all with Cengage. She is also the author of Inter-Act: Interpersonal Communication, Concepts, Skills and Contexts with Oxford University Press.

Deanna Sellnow

Deanna D. Sellnow, Ph.D., is a Luminary Research Professor of Strategic Communication in the Nicholson School of Communication at the University of Central Florida. Her research focuses on instructional communication as it occurs in conventional and nonconventional classrooms (and in risk and crisis contexts in particular). She also studies the persuasive power of popular culture, particularly in entertainment media (music, movies, television, advertisements). Published in regional, national and international journals, Dr. Sellnow is co-author of Communicate!, COMM, SPEAK, and The Challenge of Effective Speaking, all with Cengage. She also wrote The Rhetorical Power of Popular Culture: Considering Mediated Texts, with Sage. Dr. Sellnow is also the former editor of the Journal of Communication Pedagogy, Communication Teacher, and the Basic Communication Course Annual.

Rudolph F. Verderber

Rudolph F. Verderber is a Distinguished Teaching Professor of Communication Emeritus at the University of Cincinnati, and the former National Speaker's Association Professor of the Year. He is also one of the all-time bestselling communication studies authors. The strength of his basic texts lies in his ability to explain and exemplify concepts, theories and skills to introductory level students. His Cengage texts (Communicate!, The Challenge of Effective Speaking, COMM, and SPEAK) have a reputation for being student favorites due to their accessible presentation of theory and skills.
  • Expanded discussion of cultural and co-cultural identities as related to effective and ethical communication.
  • Fully integrated examples of communication theories, concepts and strategies as applied to both live and in-person settings, as well as to technologically mediated contexts.
  • Expanded coverage of ethical and unethical communication across contexts and cultures, including the critical role of both effective listening and civil discourse.
  • Fully integrated discussion of mis-, dis-, and mal-information as it occurs across Internet platforms generally and on social media in particular.
  • Completely new “Question of Ethics” features that depict post-pandemic communication contexts, topics and channels.
  • "Speech-Plan Action" steps and activities provide students with concrete steps in speech planning, organizing and presenting. These activities help walk students through the process of preparing and presenting formal speeches one step at a time, making the process more manageable and the product more effective.
  • "Communicating in the World" features illustrate key communication concepts and theories played out in daily life. These features help make abstract concepts concrete as students see them happening in the actual lived experiences of real people.
  • "Diverse Voices" essays target intercultural communication challenges as told by real people who have experienced them. These essays help students see the subtle ways in which cultural norms impact effective (or ineffective) perceptions and communication interactions.
  • Sample Formal Outlines prepared by students and annotated by the authors help readers see how the elements of effective formal presentations are applied to actual speeches.
  • "Apply It!" boxes are threaded through out the chapters. Students are invited to reflect on concepts being discussed as they occur or have occurred in their personal or professional lives.
  • Scientific Terminology and Translations are used intentionally and defined simply to empower students to learn the terms of the discipline in ways that make them intelligible regardless of the reader’s academic area(s) of study/expertise.
