Rebecca C. Hains

  • Chapter Learning Objectives help students focus on key concepts.
  • Completely up to date, the new edition includes discussions on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on various aspects of personal and professional communication. The pandemic's impact on day-to-day life included widespread increases in telecommuting and online learning, resulting in rapid adoption of remote communication technologies.
  • Hundreds of newly updated citations are integrated throughout the text, substantially bolstering recent scholarship.
  • Thoughtfully selected with diversity, equity and inclusion in mind, updated photos and illustrations modernize the visual elements, making the text even more engaging for students.
  • The authors' use of more inclusive language and examples throughout helps all students -- whatever their background -- feel connected to the text.
  • After reading the latest about communication theories, research and skills, students apply what they've learned to their own lives through Communication Highlight boxes, which provide examples of communication in personal and work contexts.
  • A signature feature of the text, diversity, equity and inclusion coverage is thoroughly woven into every chapter. In addition to reflecting contemporary society, this emphasis helps students appreciate social diversity, understand its profound implications for how we communicate with others and see themselves better reflected in the text.
  • Digital media and communication are now integrated throughout the text, interwoven with the main contents. This change reflects the fact that these media are no longer new, but rather are well established in society, thoroughly intertwined with many aspects of day-to-day life.
  • Extensive public speaking coverage begins early in the text with examples, exercises and sample speeches with annotated commentary, all designed to support speaking as a key course component. Enriched attention to effective reasoning -- including the Toulmin model -- and discussion of fallacies in reasoning also help students master public speaking skills.
  • Case studies in every chapter expand the conversation by enabling students to see how the theories and principles explored in the text play vital roles in everyday life. The scenarios and speeches featured in the case studies are also available as multimedia presentations.
