Construction Jobsite Management 5th Edition by William R. Mincks/Hal Johnston

Overview

Mincks/Johnston's newly updated CONSTRUCTION JOBSITE MANAGEMENT, 5e, examines all facets of construction project management from the contractor’s point of view. The responsibilities of project managers, construction superintendents and construction engineers are covered in depth, from configuring a project team through closing out a project. The text maintains a strong focus on jobsite personnel activities, outlining proven procedures and offering helpful techniques to manage projects effectively from start to finish. Clear, concise language and accurate, relevant details make this book an essential introduction to the "real world" of construction jobsite management. The text introduces BIM in construction documents and lean construction methods.

  • The chapter on safety contains numerous updates to provide readers with accurate, current information on important topics related to jobsite safety, including Safety Factsheets, pedestrian safety around job sites, the use of protective clothing and accident reporting.
  • The text includes new and expanded safety information relevant to today’s industry and current best practices, including a new Safety Inspection Checklist and a full section devoted to environmental protection and safety.
  • The chapter that covers sustainable construction practices has been updated to reflect current processes and standards outlined by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) commissioning throughout all stages of a construction project.
  • New information included in discussions of project management methods covers key tasks and concepts for today’s professionals, including the dunning process, the use of cloud computing and Trimble for document management, current hardware requirements and an all-new section discussing current mobile technologies and their advantages for jobsite management.
  • The text includes Building Information Modeling (BIM), covering this model from the design stage through post-construction, explaining the differences between 2-dimensional construction documents and 3-dimensional models and exploring the advantages of BIM for project owners.
  • New chapter on Lean Construction, discussing the lean construction philosophy and several methods used to eliminate waste and increase value, has been added. It emphasizes efficient construction methods. Lean construction provides value for the customer and is part of the evolution of construction project management to provide success for all of the stakeholders.
  • Throughout the text, discussions of current management methods stress real-world applications rather than theory alone, making this an ideal reference for use on the jobsite.
  • The authors draw on decades of hands-on construction management experience and bringing concepts to life with clarity and confidence while always stressing their on-the-job applications in real-world scenarios.
  • The text includes numerous examples of construction documents commonly used in project management such as AIA papers, as well information on how the documents are used in typical project situations.
  • Each chapter includes clearly defined learning objectives and review questions to help reinforce key concepts and encourage mastery, while an online Instructor’s Manual includes answers to review questions, making it easier to facilitate class discussions and assess progress.
