Overview

Introduce your students to major perspectives in ethical theory and contemporary moral debates with MacKinnon/Fiala's ETHICS: THEORY AND CONTEMPORARY ISSUES, 10th EDITION. Explore comprehensive and clear introductions to general and specific areas of ethical debates. The title's “Theory” section covers issues in metaethics, religion and global ethics, and discussions of major normative theories such as utilitarianism, deontology, natural law ethics and more. All of the theory chapters provide updated coverage of questions of race and gender. The book’s “Contemporary Issues” section includes major sections about bioethics, including abortion, euthanasia and biotechnology. It also includes social justice topics such as racial discrimination, affirmative action, reparation, transgender issues and more. Social order and violence topics include prison and capital punishment, and the non-human topics include animal rights, environmental ethics and artificial intelligence.

  • This edition has substantive treatment of race and gender throughout. This focus on inclusivity and diversity is seen in the inclusion of even more diverse voices in the short primary source readings included in each chapter.
  • A new chapter on healthcare ethics features basic issues in bioethics, as well as issues that have emerged from COVID-19, including justice in health care, vaccines and public health. There is also a new chapter about birthing and dying that incorporates material from previous edition chapters on abortion and euthanasia, while also updating information about the new legal situation in the United States.
  • Every chapter has been updated with the latest factual, detailed information on hot topics ranging from climate change to mass incarceration to AI. Teachers who want students to think about and discuss contemporary facts and cases will find these updates quite useful.
