Overview
In RESEARCH METHODS FOR THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, 6th Edition, Fredrick J Gravetter and Lori-Ann B. Forzano help students see how interesting and exciting experimental and nonexperimental research can be. The text leads students through the research process from start to finish, including tips and strategies for generating research ideas and hypotheses, selecting measures and participants, and designing research. This step-by-step approach emphasizes the decisions researchers must make at each stage of the process. The authors avoid a "cookbook" presentation by linking terminology with applied concepts; their "lecture in a book" style emphasizes clear, thorough explanations. Research examples present topics of particular interest to students, and content throughout the book reflects current APA guidelines. Also available: MindTap a customizable, digital teaching and learning resource.
- Up-to-date research examples are selected to illustrate concepts as clearly as possible and with an eye towards being of particular interest to students.
- The new edition has the same look and feel as the authors' Essential of Statistics book, enabling a seamless transition from statistics to research methods -- especially with the overview of statistics in Chapter 15. Together, the two books provide a smooth two-semester sequence of Statistics and Methods, or content for an integrated Statistics/Methods course.
- Nearly all multiple-choice Learning Checks (located at the end of each section) are new or updated -- with at least one question provided for each of the section's Learning Objectives.
- The new edition incorporates the most recent APA guidelines, including the 2010 and 2017 ethical standard amendments.
- The authors' student-friendly approach includes an informal, conversational writing style that emphasizes discussion and explanation of topics, rather than a simple "cookbook" presentation of facts.
- Pedagogical aids include chapter Learning Objectives, chapter overviews, chapter summaries, and a list of keywords for quick review at the end of each chapter. Save time by using the Learning Checks and end-of-chapter exercises and activities as prepackaged assignments.
- Learning Objectives are linked to Learning Check questions at the end of each section, the exercises at the end of each chapter, and the test bank questions to assist with your assessment efforts.
- Organized according to the research process, the book is appropriate for use in a lecture-only class, a class with a lab component, or a class with a writing component consisting of a research proposal or report. A flow-chart of the research process inside the book's front cover reminds students of the organization of the process and the book, and each chapter overview reminds students of their current location in the research process framework.
- The order of several chapters can be varied to meet the requirements of different instructors. For example, descriptive and/or correlational research could be presented before experimental research. The book's extensive coverage of topics in Research Methods (including experimental and non-experimental, single-case designs, writing, etc.) allows you to choose which chapters to assign, or to count on the text to cover certain topics with the students.
- Appendices support the primary narrative. Appendix B presents numerical examples of all the descriptive and inferential statistics introduced in Chapter 15 and throughout the book. Whenever a statistic is mentioned in the text, the authors cite the corresponding example in Appendix B. Appendix C describes the step-by-step procedure for using SPSS to perform the descriptive and inferential statistics discussed in Chapter 15 and demonstrated in Appendix B. Appendix D presents a complete example of a research report demonstrating the current APA-style guidelines.
- MindTap for Gravetter and Forzano's Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences includes useful features -- an ebook, previews with quizzes, modular (section) quizzes, and practice tests (all with learning opportunities like immediate feedback, explanations, and retaking options). For instructors, MindTap features an embedded gradebook and easy use for online, hybrid, or classroom-based courses.
- Instructor resources include extensive PowerPoint® slides detailing each chapter and a test bank organized by section, with each item keyed by Learning Objective, level of difficulty, and Blooms Taxonomy.
