Rebecca Howard, Ph.D.

Rebecca Howard, Ph.D., is an early childhood consultant, professional development trainer and university instructor. She holds an interdisciplinary doctorate in educational leadership and an Master of Arts in theater. Dr. Howard is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and is a faculty member at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she has held a variety of teaching and advising positions since 2000 in the areas of teacher education, educational leadership, interdisciplinary studies and theater. She founded the Oxford Early Childhood Center in 1986, and she was owner/administrator and lead teacher until the program closed in 2014. While operating OECC, she created the OECC Integrated Curriculum, which was grounded in creativity and culturally responsive practice as foundational pedagogical components of a comprehensive approach to development across domains. She has presented at numerous professional conferences, provided extensive professional development trainings over a wide range of topics, published articles for Childhood Education and Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism, and authored a chapter on dramatic play and gender performance in the book Children Under Construction: Play as Curriculum (2010).

Rosalind Charlesworth, Ph.D.

Rosalind Charlesworth, Ph.D., was professor emerita and retired department chair in the Department of Child and Family Studies at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. Dr. Charlesworth’s career in early childhood education included experiences with both typical and non-typical young children in laboratory schools, public schools and day care centers, plus research in social and cognitive development and behavior. Throughout her career, she was known for her contributions to research on early childhood teachers' beliefs and practices.
  • Increased emphasis on problem-solving, discourse and hands-on activities that are relevant to a child’s experience and environment as the basis for concept and skill development. Significant updates to research and resources also reflect current practice for specific STEM content as well as overall child development.
  • Technology for Young Children boxed features address the role that digital technology tools are playing in children's education and have been updated to reflect the rapidly evolving content available for the application of digital technology in learning environments.
  • Sections that address Support for English Language Learners and Cultural Diversity have been separated out from “Special Needs” sections to reflect that ELL status is actually a cultural context that offers benefits for all children in a classroom. Each section suggests strategies for insuring that activities, experiences, environments and instruction are inclusive of all children from varied backgrounds and cultural contexts.
  • The content has been rearranged and enhanced to elevate science, technology and engineering to a more equal representation with math in the text. Content has been redesigned for better readability, with fewer visual interruptions of text. STEM experiences have been integrated into other curriculum areas so that the title can be used in integrated or separate math and science methods courses.
  • An appendix has been added that gathers all the examples of integration across domains and content areas in one convenient location.
  • Assessment and instructional tasks are presented in developmental sequence, with adaptations throughout, for students with special needs.
  • Learning Objectives at the beginning of each chapter correlate with main headings within the chapter and with the end-of-chapter summaries. The objectives focus students' reading and show them what they should know, understand and be able to demonstrate or apply after completing the chapter.
  • Improved integration of early childhood and primary grades professional standards helps students make connections between what they learn in the text and the standards. A complete list of the standards addressed in the book appears in a chart on the inside covers.
