Why am I here? At the start of each chapter, students complete a short activity written specifically to help them understand how the material they are about to study relates to the overall course goals and their future career in the helping professions. Through polling activities and self-inquiry exercises, students are immediately able to interact with the material in new and interesting ways.
What am I learning? Students complete the chapter reading and then take a brief multiple-choice quiz that allows them to gauge their understanding of the material they have read.
How do I practice what I’ve learned? Each chapter includes activities designed to allow students to practice and apply what they are learning:
Video Activities present students with professional interviews, simulated sessions, and more as they progress through the course. Students are prompted to answer embedded questions as they watch each video to help them connect the video to what they are learning in the text and classroom.
Exercises ask students a series of short-answer questions aimed at getting them to think critically about key concepts discussed within each chapter.
Case studies give students the opportunity to practice and develop the concepts discussed within each chapter.
The video-based simulation activity, Helper Studio, puts students directly in the role of helping professional. Students respond to clients by recording video responses that demonstrate important skills and confidence necessary for success in the profession.
What does this mean to me? Reflection activities ask students to apply the chapter concepts directly to their lives, coursework, current cases, and future careers in the helping professions.
