Overview

This edited text brings together a wide range of global contributions to examine issues of education from philosophical, sociological and historical perspectives. A particular focus is on the New Zealand context. The early chapters examine the big picture, with globalisation central, while later chapters make strong links between theory and teacher/educator practice.

Vicki Carpenter

Dr Vicki Carpenter is the lead editor of this contributed text and a principal lecturer in the School of Social and Policy Studies, Faculty of Education, University of Auckland. She is the Faculty EdD Programme Advisor. Vicki lectures in teacher education, masters and doctoral programmes, and supervises student theses. Her teaching and school management background is in primary, intermediate, area and secondary schools. Vicki’s research interests centre on matters of social justice. Much of her research concerns schooling in low SES communities, the political context, effective pedagogy and policy/curriculum matters.

Joce Jesson

Dr Joce Jesson is a principal lecturer in the School of Social and Policy Studies, Faculty of Education, University of Auckland. Her research interests are in union education, adult learning, continuing professional development and educators’ work. She is a Director of Ako-Aotearoa, the National Centre for Tertiary Teaching and a Fellow of NZEI. Joce publishes regularly on educators’ work. Her school teaching ranges from rural to inner city schools with high Māori or Pacific rolls.

Peter Roberts

Dr Peter Roberts is an associate professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Auckland. He teaches philosophy of education and educational policy studies. His interests include the pedagogy of Paulo Freire, literature and education, the ethics and politics of education, and tertiary education policy.

Maxine Stephenson

Dr Maxine Stephenson is a senior lecturer in History and Sociology of Education within the School of Social and Policy Studies, Faculty of Education, University of Auckland. She has been both a post-primary and early childhood educator. Her research interests include historical research in educational settings, state theory and the origins of state education systems, issues of inclusion/exclusion, eugenics and education, and teacher education for diverse classrooms.
