Surgical Instrumentation 3rd Edition by Nancymarie Phillips/Anita Hornacky

Overview

A favorite for its clear organization, logical flow and engaging writing style, SURGICAL INSTRUMENTATION, Third Edition, has been revised and expanded with photographs and line drawings showing hundreds of surgical instruments in vivid detail. Chapter content walks students through basic and advanced concepts in an accessible way, covering everything from the history of surgical instruments to assembling the best instrument sets for a procedure. Every instrument gets focused attention and is presented alone, in collections and disassembled, with zoomed-in views of key parts. This unique, one-stop reference is an ideal resource for students and current perioperative nurses, surgical technologists, instrumentation processing technicians and other OR personnel. SURGICAL INSTRUMENTATION, Third Edition, is also available in the highly customizable, digital MindTap format, complete with instructor and student tools to enhance learning and encourage mastery.

Nancymarie Phillips

Nancymarie Phillips, RN, B.A., BSN, M.Ed., Ph.D., RNFA, CNOR(E), is professor emerita at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio, where she was director of perioperative education and the Surgical Technology Program. A perioperative nurse since 1975, Dr. Phillips is a registered nurse and registered nurse first assistant, and she is certified in perioperative nursing. Active in many areas of the field, Dr. Phillips has held local and national positions with the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and the Competency and Credentialing Institute (previously the Certification Board for Perioperative Nursing), in addition to authoring and contributing to many articles, textbooks and book chapters. She holds undergraduate degrees in health services and nursing from Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio, as well as master's and doctoral degrees in adult education and development from Cleveland State University.

Anita Hornacky

Anita Hornacky, B.S., RN, CST, CNOR, is a perioperative educator specializing in surgical pharmacology, orthopedics and a professional seminar on working in the operating room. Anita is a certified perioperative registered nurse (CNOR) and a certified surgical technologist (CST). She has worked as a surgical technologist, circulating nurse and operating room preceptor and has authored and co-authored perioperative educational online material, webinars, book chapters and textbooks. Her professional affiliations include the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST).
  • The revised and expanded Third Edition includes numerous new and updated full-color photos of common surgical instruments, as well as detailed line drawings and other visual material to help readers recognize and differentiate instruments with confidence.
  • A dedicated chapter on decontamination and sterilization gives perioperative nurses, surgical technologists and other professionals the confidence they need to ensure a sterile field in the OR, from cleaning and disassembling instruments to sterilizing and inspecting them, all while observing the latest standards of safe practice.
  • The physical textbook features a spiral binding that allows the book to open and lie flat on the desk, so readers can easily compare instruments depicted on the pages with real instruments in the lab or clinical classroom. In addition, the page size allows for ready identification of individual instruments without crowded, pre-constructed sets.
  • Each instrument is clearly and individually labeled according to proper naming conventions, so readers can learn official names and avoid the potential confusion caused by nicknames and other biases that can develop in specific regions over time.
  • The text presents common foundation sets for different types of surgical procedures, describing them according to tissue depth and the patient's body size. This helps readers learn to determine which basic foundation sets are appropriate for a specific procedure. Chapters organized by specialty also make it easy for readers to select additional instruments for each type of planned surgery.
  • Organized by function and common surgery types, the text makes instruments easier to find and presents content more clearly and logically than many other textbooks on the subject, making SURGICAL INSTRUMENTATION, Third Edition, a favorite resource for any surgical setting.
  • Each section includes helpful discussion on how and when to use selected instruments, along with steps to follow to ensure critical safety measures are in place for patients and surgical staff.
